قائمة أكبر النجوم كتلةً في الفلك هي قائمة ترتب النجوم المعروفة حتى الآن حسب كتلتها بالنسبة إلى كتلة الشمس، وتؤخذ الكتلة الشمسية كمرجع على أنها تساوي 1. تختلف بذلك تلك القائمة عن قائمة أكبر النجوم حجمًا في كون تلك الأخيرة ترتب النجوم بحسب أحجامها بالنسبة للشمس، كما توجد قائمة ثالثة ترتب النجوم حسب قدرها الظاهري وهي تسمى قائمة ألمع النجوم، وتوجد أيضًا قائمة أشد النجوم إضاءةً التي ترتب النجوم حسب قدرها المطلق أو إضاءتها.

تعتبر كتلة النجم أهم خصائصه بالإضافة إلى تركيبه الكيميائي وكذالك حجمه، حيث أن كتلة النجم تحدد إضاءته وحجمه وعمره ومصيره. وبسبب كتلتهم البالغة، فلأن تلك النجوم تنتهي في آخر عمرها بأنفجار في صورة مستعر أعظم أو مستعر مفرط العظمة وتكوّن ثقبًا أسودَ ذو كتلة فائقة أيضًا.

حدود الدقة

معظم الكتل المعطاة في القائمة أسفله لا تزال تحت البحث للتأكد من قيمها وأحيانا يعدل البحث العلمي كلما زادت دقته قيمة نجم هنا أو هناك.

وترجع قيم الكتل المذكورة في القائمة إلى تقديرات نظرية مبنية على قياسات للنجم مثل درجة حرارته وإضاءته (لمعانه المطلق). والكتل المذكورة هنا ليست أكيدة حيث أن كلا من النظريات والقياسات تستخدم أحدث ما وصلت إليه الأجهزة والمعرفة. وقد تكون النظريات أو القياسات خاطئة أو كلاهما خاطئ .على سبيل المثال النجم في في الملتهب والذي تعين كتلته بالاعتماد على بعض خصائصه فقد تكون كتلته في الحقيقة بين 25 إلى 40 كتلة شمسية كما تؤيد بعض القياسات أن كتلته قد تصل إلى 100 كتلة شمسية.

النجوم كبيرة الكتلة تعتبر نادرة، ويجدها الفلكيون عادة بعيدا جدا عن الأرض في أعماق الكون. وجميع النجوم في القائمة تبعد عنا آلاف السنين الضوئية وهذا وحده يصعب إجراء القياسات .. وبالإضافة إلى مشكلة البعد فأن النجوم ذات الكتلة الكبيرة محاطة بسحب من الغاز المتدفق، يعمل هذا الغاز على حجب النجم عنا فيصعب قياس إضاءة ودرجة حرارة النجم، وبالتالي يصعب تعيين التركيب الكيميائي الداخلي له. وفي بعض الحالات تؤدي صعوبة تعيين التركيب الكيميائي للنجم إلى صعوبة تعيين كتلته.

وعلاوة على ذلك فان حجب النجم عنا بواسطة الغازات يجعل من الصعب تحديد هل هو نجم كبير الكتلة منفرد أم أنه نجم ثنائي أو نظام نجمي متعدد. وقد تكون بعض النجوم المذكورة في القائمة تتألف في الواقع من نجمين أو أكثر مترافقة في مدارات متقاربة، كما قد يكون كل نجم في النظام النجمي كبير الكتلة وليس بالضرورة أن يكون أحدهم فقط. ولكن يوجد أيضا احتمال أن يكون أحد نجوم النظام فائق الكتلة والباقين نجوما عادية. وتعمل سحابة الغاز المحيطة بالنجم على صعوبة البت في ذلك.

ومن ضمن الكتل المعينة بدقة في القائمة نجد إن جي سي 3603 -أ1 ونجم عنقود وسترلوند 2 النجم وولف رايت 20أ والنجم الثنائي نجم وولف رايت 21أ. كتل النجوم الثلاثة عينت عن طريق قياس الحركة المدارية للنجم الثنائي أي له نجم قرين يدور حوله مما يجعل تعيين كتلة النجمين ممكنة من خلال دراسة الحركات المدارية وعن طريق تطبيق قوانين كبلر الخاصة بحركة الكواكب ، وهذه يشمل قياس السرعات الشعاعية والمنحنيات الضوئية . قياس السرعات الشعاعية لا يسفر إلا عن الحد الأدنى لقيمة الكتل وذلك اعتمادا على الميل، وتوفر المنحنيات الضوئية للنجوم الثنائية الكسوفية المعلومات الناقصة. .

أهمية التطور النجمي

بعض النجوم قد تكون أثقل مما هي عليه اليوم. ومن المرجح أن الكثير من النجوم قد فقدت عشرات الكتل الشمسية من المواد في عملية التفريغ، أو في أحداث انفجار شبة مستعر أو مستعر أعظم مخادع وهناك أيضا - أو بالأحرى - نجوم تظهر الآن على القائمة ولكن لم تعد موجودة كنجوم.[2]

القائمة

هناك عدد قليل من النجوم ذات كتلة تقدر بحوالي 25 كتلة شمسية أو أكثر، بما في ذلك نجوم تجمع أرشز وتجمع نجوم الدجاجة OB2 وتجمع بسميس 24-1 وعنقود آر136 . لاحظ أن جميع النجوم من النوع O لها كتل أكبر من 15 M☉ .

هذه القائمة أبعد مايكون عن الكمال، وخاصة للنجوم الأقل من 80 M☉، على الرغم من أن غالبية النجوم التي يعتقد أنها ذا كتلة أكبر من 100 M☉ معروضة.

ثقوب سوداء

الثقب الأسود هو المرحلة الأخيرة من عمر نجم عظيم الكتلة . وفي الواقع فهو ليس نجما حيث أنه لا يولّد طاقة عن طريق الاندماج النووي (يتوقف الاندماج النووي في النجم كبير الكتلة بعد استهلاكه لوقوده من الهيدروجين والهيليوم ويصبح ثقبا أسودا لا يشع ضوءا).
